Pyrite heave

From about 1997 onwards, pyrite (known more commonly as fool’s gold) could be found in Pyrite Irelandbuildings materials across Ireland. This is now causing significant damage as pyrite is a mineral that swells gradually over time. Consequently homes are suffering from cracked walls, buckled floor boards, movement in external walls and uneven flooring levels. This is known as pyrite heave.

Repairing pyrite heave is extremely expensive and is estimated to cost around €40,000 to €50,000. This will be devastating for those concerned who will have to live with the worry and discomfort of a pyrite-riddled home. It will also drastically reduce the value and appeal of the property, making it difficult to sell. Home owners will then find themselves deep in negative equity with no way out.

Claiming for pyrite damage

Acknowledging the harmful implications of pyrite damage, a Pyrite Remediation Scheme has been introduced throughout Ireland. However, the terms of the scheme are strict and not all applications submitted will be accepted.

Therefore if you are aware of pyrite damage in your home, it is best to speak to a legal expert to find out what options are available. If initial investigations suggest that pyrite is present in your home and is causing serious damage, a solicitor can help you pursue a pyrite claim.

Taking legal action will ensure that you get the financial redress needed to cover the cost of remedial works on your home, and will compensate you for any physical, emotional or financial injury you have wrongfully incurred.
